Trout Fishing Bait
Trout fishermen often ask the question, “What kind of trout fishing bait do I use? What works the best for catching trout?” If you have ever walked through a sporting goods store, you have probably noticed a wide array of different types of trout fishing bait. There is the live bait that you pick up early in the morning for a day of fishing or you have the option of artificial bait that can be used over and over again.
Let us take a look at the options available for live bait. The first is called Nightcrawlers. They are also known as Lumbricus Terrestris; large worms that can measure in length up to 25 centimeters and all the way up to 1 centimeter in diameter. They tend to be dark in color, yet there are some that are light tan or cream colored. This is a solid choice if you want to use live bait. They are easy to hook and also work the best when you are casting out towards the bank of a creek. Trout love the taste and can’t get enough of them. These also work really well if you are fishing the deeper waters.
Another good choice for live bait is the Hellgrammite. These are an insect that spends a large majority of their lives in the larva stage. When using Hellgrammites it is important to know that they will bite if provoke. Use gloves or protective covering when using these insects as bait. They are great swimmers and can move through the water quickly. Fish are attracted to the movement. They make for a tasty trout meal. This type of bait is easier to find during the spring months and then tend to disappear during the summer time as the larva turn into adults. One drawback from this type of bait is they are hard to cast over long distances. It is better to use this kind of bait for shorter casts or casts that are closer to the shore.
Minnows are another great choice for live bait. Minnows come from a very large, diverse species. They are incorrectly categorized as small. Some species of minnows can grow up to 50 lbs. What classifies a fish as a minnow is its one dorsal fin plus nine other rays. But for all intent and purposes the live bait used for fishing trout are the smaller of the species. They are great for those months were the fish are very sluggish. This generally occurs early in the season. This bait is also great for catching the larger more mature trout that tend to swim slower and enjoy the deeper waters.
The best live bait is Crayfish. Crayfish kind of resemble a lobster. They also go by red claw, mudbugs or crawdads. This bait is often used by the experts and known for hooking the big one. This bait is often used with gang hooks (multiple pre-tied hooks on a fishing line). Careful when using this bait, although Crayfish are smaller than a lobster, they can still use their claws to give you a good pinch.
Now let us take a look at artificial bait. This kind of bait is man-made and can be found in all shapes, sizes, colors and materials. Some materials are better than others. When using artificial bait, make sure you spray the bait with something to mask the synthetic smell or purchase high quality man-made bait that comes ready to use. The only real advantage to artificial bait comes into play when you are fishing a lake that stocks its own trout. Farmed trout tend to like artificial bait.
Way back over 40 years ago, there was bait that worked really well no matter the location or species of trout. The bait was cheese. You could find it in every sporting goods store or sporting goods section. K-Mart was a big seller of this kind of bait. If you are interested in trying out this bait, you can still find it. Cheese bait is easy to place on a hook. It sticks well to the metal and completely camouflages the hook. The bait comes in different flavors and normally is packaged in a small glass container.
A trout fisherman can try all the baits mentioned above and at times may go the whole day switching back and forth between different baits until one starts to work. There are some days when all baits will work. A good trout fisherman will carry a mix of different baits. Where one will fail another will do well. This is how a fisherman can increase the good days over the bad days.
